There are few surprises in the 2010 Non-Equity Jeff Award nominations. Most of the plays that made the buzz in the community this season are nominated, including Theo Ubique ’s Chess and Bohemian Theatre Ensemble ’s The Glorious Ones. Both of those productions garnered eight nominations. Both Boho and Ubique received 11 nominations each. Boho got three for it’s production of I Am My Own Wife and Ubique got two for Man of La Mancha and Taming of the Shrew. The other theatre in the Glenwood Avenue Arts District—Lifeline—garnered 13 nominations for three shows, including six nods for Treasure Island, four for Busman’s Honeymoon and three for Mrs. Caliban. There were theatres outside of Rogers Park who fared well, too. The House Theatre ’s production of Wilson Wants it All received six nominations—the only show nominated from House for last season. Circle Theatre did well, with a total of 10 nominations, six of them for The Who’s Tommy. Circle’s The Analytical Engine and Little Women were also nominated. It is a certainty that Theo Ubique will win at least one award, that of actress in a principal role in a musical. All three nominees are from Ubique shows: Danielle Brothers and Sarah Hayes from Man of La Mancha and Maggie Portman from Chess. There are three categories in which one person is nominated for two shows: Frances Limoncelli is nominated for her adaptations of Busman’s Honeymoon and Mrs. Caliban for Lifeline; Bob Knuth is nominated for scenic design for Circle’s The Analytical Engine and Little Women; and Geoff Coates is nominated for choreographing the fights in Backstage’s On an Average Day and Lifeline’s Treasure Island. Other individuals nominated for more than one award are Kevin Bellie (choreography and projection design for Circle’s Who’s Tommy), Brenda Didier (co-direction and choreography for Ubique’s Chess), and Michael Rohd (for directing and co-writing House’s Wilson Wants it All). The Non-Equity Jeff Awards will be Monday, June 7 at, as usual, the Park West, 322 W. Armitage. Doors open at 6 p.m. with a cash bar and a light buffet at 6:30. Show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Dress in “festive cocktail attire.” You can buy tickets at www.jeffawards.org. 2010 Non-Equity Jeff Award Nominees PRODUCTION - PLAYBusman’s Honeymoon - Lifeline TheatreDeath of a Salesman - Raven Theatre Killer Joe - Profiles Theatre The Pillowman - Redtwist Theatre St. Crispin’s Day - Strawdog Theatre Company Wilson Wants It All - The House Theatre of Chicago PRODUCTION - MUSICALChess - Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre i/a/w Michael JamesEvolution/Creation - Quest Theatre Ensemble The Glorious Ones - Bohemian Theatre Ensemble The Who’s Tommy - Circle Theatre DIRECTOR - PLAYAaron Todd Douglas - Twelve Angry Men -
